Canon Ip4500 Canon Pixma IP4600

Single-function, basic inkjet printers suitable for the home or home office haven't quite gone the way of the dinosaur, or even the not-quite-extinct dot matrix printer, but they're growing rare. More and more, standard inkjet printers are being replaced with all-in-ones (AIOs) on the one hand and heavily photocentric printers on the other. When Canon replaced the iP4300 with the nearly identical but more expensive Pixma iP4500 (there was no iP4400), that unit's higher price was enough to keep it from earning an Editors' Choice. The iP4600 drops the price back to where it was for the iP4300, but it also loses print speed, which has long been one of the great strengths of Canon's Pixma printers. The step down in speed is enough to keep the iP4600 out of contention for Editors' Choice, leaving the category still without a current winner.

Like earlier models, the iP4600 offers excellent paper handling. Two paper trays give you the choice of loading 150 sheets of plain paper in each or loading plain paper into one and photo paper into the other. The first choice lets you have a more-than-ample 300 sheets loaded at a time. The second lets you switch between printing standard documents and photos without having to swap paper in the tray, and it still gives you more input capacity than you'll get from many printers aimed at the home and home office. Even better, the printer also includes an automatic duplexer to let you print on both sides of a page.

Setup is standard for a Canon printer. Set the 6-by-11.7-by-17-inch (HWD) iP4600 in place, remove the packing materials, then plug in the power cord, snap in the printhead and five ink cartridges, and load paper. Next, run the automated setup program from the disc, then plug in the USB cable when the program tells you to. The five ink cartridges, one for each color, are for cyan, yellow, magenta, and two versions of black--a pigment-based black for text and a dye-based black for photos.

Canon All In One Printers Canon I-SENSYS MF8050Cn - Colour Laser MFP Review

Canon is picking up the pieces with laser printing market and it's doing a decent job. One of its latest colour laser release, the Canon i-SENSYS MF8050Cn is the printer to look out for. For starters, it is a multi-function colour printer and features solid interfaces for hooking onto PCs and networks. The printer comes with a flatbed scanner for scanning and copying documents. A 33.6 KBps fax module is also integrated. Most importantly, it can print in monochrome and colour, and the printer costs under £320.

Print quality from Canons are generally good. We decided to take a closer look at this printer. Black prints were OK at best, with the colour fills being on the lighter side of things. If it was a tad darker, it would have been perfect. Colour prints are generally good with no specific complaints. Photo prints came out quite accurate to the digital images that we employed.

Canon claims that this colour laser printer can spit out prints at 12 pages per minute for monochrome prints and 8 pages per minute for colour documents. We ran a 20 page test and the results obtained were more or less on the lines we expected it to be; at 9.5 pages per minute for monochrome and 5.5 pages per minute for colour.

Cost of printing is generally an area where Canon lacks majorly and no surprises in that regard for this printer. The Canon i-SENSYS MF8050Cn printer is economy for monochrome prints at 2.9p but swings the other way around for colour documents at 11.9p.

The Canon Pixma MP980 is a capable all-in-one device that prints, faxes, and copies documents in full colour 4,800x9,600-pixel resolution, thanks to a unique six colour ink bay that includes a special grey cartridge for more distinct greyscale photo prints. The AU$449 MP980 lends a hand to amateur photo enthusiasts with a large 3.5-inch LCD screen, an easy-to-use control panel, and a media card reader, but we're unsatisfied with the difficult wireless setup, the slower-than-average output speeds, and the inflated price.

Design

The Pixma MP980 AIO takes the same shape as the rest of the Canon's MP series, but this year's model gets the shrinking ray, measuring 47cm high by 38.5cm wide by 19.9cm deep. The all-in-one weighs a hefty 10.7kg because of the auto-duplexer built into the back for double-sided prints, so you probably won't want to move it around a lot on your work space. The silver and glossy black body exudes stylish professionalism, and the scanner lid sits so flush against the main body that you can barely tell it's there. In addition, the main output tray and control panel fold in to save space.

The control panel rests on the lid and houses a bright 3.5-inch colour LCD similar to the screen on the Pixma MP970. The menu is arranged in a circle, and you use the tactile dial on the base panel to access the different settings. The wheel and "OK" buttons offer a satisfying click with each selection, but there's also a four-way directional pad surrounding the dial if you don't feel comfortable with the wheel. Most of the time, we preferred the scroll wheel, but the buttons are also easy to use when you know exactly where to go.

The rest of the pad contains the rest of the shortcut buttons, including a Navi button for help with onscreen menus, a home button, instant colour and black copy keys, two buttons to increase and decrease the amount of copies, as well as a stop button to cancel a job in progress. Finally, two soft buttons sit directly underneath the screen to navigate through the onscreen menus.

The printer handles paper input by the main 150-sheet cassette as well as another 150-sheet tray that folds out of the rear. We always prefer two input trays to one and found that using the main tray for plain and the rear tray for smaller photo paper is much more convenient than constantly switching the different sizes. We do have a gripe with build quality of the main tray, which rolls out of the bottom and feels as if it's made out of cheap plastic. Only time will reveal the tray's true durability, but we're disheartened by its flimsy feel out of the box.

Canon uses six individual ChromaLife100 ink cartridges including one dedicated grey cartridge for better quality monochrome photos. At the time of writing, all of the dye-based colour inks and black inks could be found online for around AU$18 each.

Features

The Pixma MP980 offers a collection of features that make life much easier for the home photo enthusiast. You can connect the printer to a computer through a standard USB cord, or to your network with the Ethernet port on the back, or even go wireless with the built-in 802.11b/g wireless print server. There's also a PictBridge USB port on the bottom as well as a full media card reader for transferring and printing photos directly from a digital camera. Unlike the competition, Canon doesn't include a wireless configuration tutorial with its software, so you might encounter problems similar to ours during setup, which requires you to establish a USB connection first. After several days of trying to get our router to connect with the printer, we finally just started clean and reinstalled the driver. After that, everything went smoothly, but it might take you a couple tries before your system connects with the canon pixma ip1000.

The copier on the MP980 has all the features you'd expect from a multifunction printer. You can enlarge the original up to 400 per cent or simply fit the entire document to a page. Other special features include two-sided copying, borderless copying, exact duplication, cropped copy, and 2-on-1 and 4-on-1 photo collages.

Scanning is also typical, with save options that include sending the file straight to your PC, as an e-mail attachment, scanned as a PDF, or simply open it to an application. You can save all documents as TIFF, JPEG, bitmap, or PDF files, and the scanner now supports film and negatives as well. The negative and slide holders are accessible underneath the document protector underneath the lid. The scanner supports document sizes up to 21.5cm by 27.9cm, but the fixed hinge makes it difficult to stretch the scanner cover over thicker documents and books.

Performance

The Pixma MP980 showed significant speed improvements across the board with the exception of the colour text test, where the MP970 scored 7.85 pages per minute to the MP980's 5.75 pages per minute. Compared with the rest of the competition, though, the MP980 fared about average. 1) Don't let any color run out of ink

Ink is a lubricant for the print heads. Some color ink is used even if you only print in black or vice versa. If you printed with a color missing, you could destroy that print head from the friction of running without ink to lubricate it. That's why most printers won't allow you to print with a color missing even if you aren't using it. If you allow a color to go empty, the residual ink in the head could clog and become permanently blocked. You would never be able to print that color again. So always replace ink cartridges as soon as they are empty. Do not use tricks like chip resetters to fool the printer into thinking a cartridge has ink when it is empty.

2) Always leave the printer on

Leaving your printer on takes very little power. Every so often the printer sends a signal to cycle the ink in the heads so it doesn't clog. If you turn your printer off, the next time you turn it on it will do a cleaning which wastes a lot of ink. Considering that some companies give you only 3-7 ml of ink to begin with, you don't want to waste 2-3 ml on a cleaning. The excess ink is soaked up by the waste pad beneath the printer. When the waste pad is full, the printer stops working. It will cost more than a new printer to repair it. Shutting off an inkjet between uses can actually shorten its life and will definitely use up the ink faster.

If you ignore tip #2 at least know the following

3) Never shut off an inkjet through a power strip

When you shut down a printer by pressing its power button, it goes through a shut down routine designed to clear the ink from the heads. If you use a power strip, it won't go through this routine. This can damage the heads.

4) Never turn off a printer for extended periods

If you leave the printer off for extended periods of time, the ink in the heads will clog and you will have to throw the printer away. Someone I know with a Canon (though this can happen with any inkjet) had to have the heads replaced twice within the first few months before the Canon tech told her to stop turning it off. Since then it has worked perfectly for over a year.

I don't know if this applies to other brands of printers but I know it applies to Epson. If you let the printer run out of ink, air will get into the jets and the residual ink remaining will coagulate. Air in the tiny tubes can also break the vacuum effect needed to continue pulling into to the head. This may permanently prevent those heads from ever printing again. To prevent this from happening, Epson printers report that the cartridge is out of ink when there is still some left - in order to force you to replace the ink before it runs out. However, the printer doesn't know exactly how much ink is really left. It estimates. This means that things can go wrong and it is possible for you to be printing with an empty cartridge.

What can go wrong?
1) You print a lot of photos or pages requiring heavy ink use. The printer estimates the ink remaining based on the number of pages printed and average coverage per page.
2) You remove and re-insert a cartridge. The printer might be fooled into thinking it is a new cartridge and reset the counter to full. The ink will get used faster than the printer anticipates.
